The Elephant Parade
Harapan at Royal Hospital Chelsea June 2010The Elephant Parade was an art project consisting of 260 life-sized baby elephants decorated by as many artists and displayed in locations around London. I was asked to paint this one by a charity called S.O.S. (The Sumatran Orangutan Society). My design was sadly influenced by the loss of habitat that both the Asian elephant and the Orangutan suffer from. But I also wanted to make Harapan as bright and desirable as possible to attract a high price.Photos of the finished Elephant
After an online auction that saw his price rise week after week, a final auction was held by Sothebys in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea and Harapan reached an amazing £21,250. A price which still absolutely stuns me!
